A Freemasons Journey In The Lodge Of Benevolence
I became a Freemason when I joined The Lodge of Benevolence 5612 based in Pudsey in May 1985 and what was totally unexpected was how much I felt “right at home from the start”.
It was so different from my “day job”, It allowed me to forget the pressures associated with my work, as an engineer and focus on the lodge, the friends I made within the lodge and of course freemasonry in general.
I also realised just how philanthropic Benevolence was and how “looking after number one was the furthest from their minds”. What was equally enlightening was the fact that no matter who you were or where you came from, you were considered as equal.
What was “remarkable for me” was the scale of support the lodge of benevolence 5612 gave to the local community along with several regional and national charities.
I also realised the extent each brother had in terms of respect and care for every other and how I found myself adopting this approach to my fellow workmates, family members and friends.
Freemasonry ritual is enlightening and can be daunting at times (such as when you start the process of learning). However, all of those fears melt away when you start to understand the principles of being a good person, the fellowship and the belonging to an organisation that has a history that extends back as far as King Solomon.
“I’ve been at both ends of the giving and receiving of assistance and understanding in Freemasonry and appreciate the quiet andrespectful way we, and our charities if needed, look after brethren, their families and the wider world without making a huge song anddance”.
